After a long and winding road out of winter, most people find themselves itching for summertime everything. But what they often aren’t anticipating is the more literal itch that comes along with the warm weathered season. This undesirable side effect is a derivative that stems from any number of activities all resulting in the same unpleasant reality: skin that requires scratching. But this threat to the body’s largest organ doesn’t have to leave you prickling away on the sidelines of summer fun. From precautions to palliatives, there are solutions in place to save your skin from the season’s most unsavory stings.

An Ounce of Prevention…

Is worth a pound of cure as the old saying goes. And if you’re taking an expensive vacation that could be sabotaged by a preventable skin affliction, it could be worth a heck of a lot more than that. When preparing for summer excursions, the mind gets caught up in details like packing the right shoes and making hard to secure dinner reservations. After-all, a much-anticipated summer trip can only be devastated by an ill-conceived footwear choice and dining at a 3-star restaurant, right? But skin maladies await your summer vacation arrival and can’t wait to ruin your good time. So it’s best to identify the worst offenders of them all and armor up in an effort to tackle them head on.

Sunburn

Most people pack their favorite sunscreens and are prepared to ward off the side effects of that beloved burning fireball in the sky. But there’s always that one-off time when you forget to reapply your protective layer or you’ve missed a sensitive spot entirely. Then you start to feel the burn. And it’s a sun-bummer. Consider packing a travel size container of soothing aloe so that you can tame the painful aftereffects of a day at the beach. Additionally, consider taking aspirin when the first onset of a sunburn appears. The anti-inflammatory properties can greatly reduce the pain and swelling.

Rash

This cluster of little hives can hit you where it hurts the most and can be caused by a number of problematic scenarios. From poison ivy to prickly heat, a rash can suck the fun-factor out of any summertime festivities. But you don’t have to let these burdensome bumps takeover. Get ahead of the game by wearing loose, cotton clothing that protects you from the elements. To thwart heat rash, change out of damp clothing as soon as possible. Apply the same sensibilities for clothing that comes into contact with the oils of poisonous leaves. Pack a travel tube of cortisone creams or gels that will combat the itchiest of reactions.

Bug Bites

If the bugs of summer go bitey, bitey, bitey underneath your vacation nighty, you’d best come prepared. Individually wrapped bug repellent wipes can be easily transported and save you from the swampiest and swarmiest of buggy hotspots. Already find you’ve been a snack for the hungry critters? Make sure you have a travel-sized topical analgesic stick like Benadryl or an oral antihistamine to counteract any reactions to an insect’s nibbling.
